Asked
Questions

Help us keep this page useful by emailing us any questions you may have about Yoga.

How often can I do yoga?
You can do yoga as often as your body wants to, literally. You can do it once a month or twice a day. The best rule of thumb is what makes your body feel good. If you find that you are not advancing in your practice and each time it feels like you are starting over, you should consider doing yoga more frequently. If, however, you find you are always sore and in pain, you are most likely over doing it and should give your body more time to heal and rest between sessions.

If I'm not very flexible, can I still do yoga?
Yes, in fact, you are exactly who should be doing yoga. Yoga is for everyone! You just need to know where your limits are and have patience with yourself. Some people are naturally more flexible whereas others require daily practice.
Also, yoga is much more than just flexibility. It addresses strength, stamina, concentration, helps reduce stress, improves circulation, and is a lot of fun too!

Does yoga help relieve stress?
Yes, yoga is one of the best ways to reduce the stress in your life. Yoga teaches you to relax and focus within your practice. With a little time this discipline becomes a part of your everyday life. People will begin asking you how you remain so calm in such a stressful world.

What is Vinyasa yoga?
Vinyasa means flow, which is a very good way to describe this form of yoga. Vinyasa yoga flows from one asana to the next while incorporating specific pranayam (breathing) rhythms. It is frequently choreographed by the instructor. Therefore, this style is a very creative and unique form that changes from class to class. This is the form that Marti Foster teaches.

What is Ashtanga yoga?
Ashtanga is a sanskrit term used in Patanjali's The Yoga Sutras, a document written around 200-400 BC. Ashtanga literally means eight limbs, in reference to the eight aspects of the yoga practice. The eight aspects are:

1. yama, restraint or abstinence.
2. niyama, observance.
3. asana, (physical)postures. Also called hatha yoga.
4. pranayama, breath control.
5. pratyahara, withdrawal of the senses.
6. dharana, concentration.
7. dhyana, meditation.
8. samadhi, bliss, superconciousness.

Ashtanga yoga, is also used to refer to a form of hatha yoga. This form, promoted by Patthabhi Jois from Mysore, India, has become very popular in the United States. This yoga style uses specific flowing (vinyasa) posture (asana) sequences to incorporate a taste of each of the eight limbs into the physical yoga practice. This style actually makes you sweat!
